Autumn Witchy Broom: A Rustic Handmade Decoration for Fall
Bring a little woodland magic to your autumn decorating with this charming handmade witchy broom. Made with natural twigs, dried foliage, ribbon, and a few seasonal embellishments, it makes a beautiful decoration for a front door, porch, entryway, fireplace, or cozy corner of your home.
The best part? You don't need to be particularly crafty to make one. You can gather much of what you need from your own yard or a nature walk and customize the broom to suit your own autumn style.
What You'll Need
A sturdy, straight branch for the broom handle
A bundle of thin, flexible twigs for the broom bristles
Twine or natural jute
Dried leaves
Small pinecones
Dried berries or faux berries
Small decorative charms, if desired
Hot glue gun and glue
Optional: small bells, wooden beads, feathers, or other rustic embellishments
Tip: For a more natural-looking broom, collect fallen branches and dried plant material rather than cutting living plants. Make sure anything you collect is dry and free of insects.
How to Make Your Autumn Witchy Broom
1. Prepare the Handle
Choose a branch approximately 2–3 feet long, depending on how large you'd like your finished broom to be.
Remove any loose bark or small side branches. You can leave some natural knots and imperfections—they add to the rustic, handmade character.
If you'd like, lightly sand any rough areas so the handle is comfortable to work with.
2. Gather Your Broom Bristles
Create a bundle of thin twigs approximately 12–18 inches long.
Arrange them so the thicker ends are together and the thinner ends point downward. Don't worry about making them perfectly even. A slightly wild and uneven shape gives the broom that wonderful woodland-witchy appearance.
3. Secure the Twigs
Place the twig bundle around the bottom end of your broom handle.
Wrap the bundle tightly with floral wire or strong twine, several times around the handle and twigs.
Tie it securely.
For extra stability, add another binding a couple of inches below the first one.
Tip: If you're using floral wire, twist the ends together tightly and tuck the sharp ends into the twigs so they aren't exposed.
4. Add Your Autumn Foliage
Now comes the fun part!
Tuck dried leaves, grasses, berries, flowers, and small seed pods into the twig bundle.
Arrange some pieces loosely so they extend beyond the main broom shape. This gives it a fuller, more organic appearance.
You can use traditional autumn colors such as:
Rust
Burnt orange
Golden brown
Olive green
Deep burgundy
5. Make the Bow
Tie a generous bow around the top of the broom bristles.
Plaid, velvet, burlap, lace, or velvet ribbon all work beautifully.
For the autumn broom pictured here, a rust, brown, and burnt-orange plaid ribbon would create a particularly cozy woodland look.
Let the ribbon tails hang naturally.
6. Add a Little Witchy Magic
This is where you can give your broom its personality.
Attach a few small embellishments with floral wire or hot glue.
Try:
A tiny bell
A feather
A small mushroom ornament
Dried herbs
You don't need many. Just a few carefully chosen pieces can create a beautiful subtle witchy aesthetic without overwhelming the natural look of the broom.
7. Give Everything a Final Touch
Step back and look at your broom from a few feet away.
Does one side look fuller than the other? Add a few twigs or pieces of foliage.
Does the ribbon need adjusting? Rearrange it.
You can also gently trim the bottom of the twig bundle if you'd like a more traditional broom shape—or leave it uneven for a wild, enchanted-forest look.
Decorating With Your Finished Broom
Your handmade broom can be displayed in so many ways.
Lean it beside your front door, prop it against a fireplace, place it beside an entryway table, or hang it vertically from a hook.
For a particularly cozy autumn display, pair it with:
Dried flowers
Fall leaves
Vintage baskets
Woven textures
A black door, stone, wood, and warm candlelight make especially beautiful companions for this little piece of autumn magic.
Make It Your Own
The wonderful thing about handmade seasonal decorations is that there isn't really a "perfect" version.
Use what you have. Gather a few things from nature. Add an old piece of ribbon from your craft drawer. Change the colors to match your home.
Whether your style leans cottagecore, woodland, whimsical, gothic, or witchy, you can make your broom completely your own.
Sometimes the most charming decorations are the ones that look as though they might have been gathered from the woods and made by hand on a quiet autumn afternoon. 🧹🍁
✨ A Little Autumn Magic
Gather a few simple things from nature, add a little imagination, and you have a beautiful piece of handmade autumn décor — something that feels less like a decoration and more like a little bit of woodland magic brought home.
